Concept

Last season the rank 1 Marksman hit WH level 1185. He did that by having 4 billion dps and brute forcing wormholes with a lot of deaths along the way. That isn't going to work in season 9, Wormholes are harder and Marksman struggles to hit 400m DPS, meaning you're going to actually have to engage with trash mobs and boss mechanics instead of instantly killing everything. My solution to this problem is use the updated dodge mechanic to create a buffer, increasing the amount of errors you can make during the more drawn-out fights.

100% dodge now means that every time you get hit you will lose a dodge stack, instead of dying instantly. This is the key to pushing wormholes as Marksman in season 9 and I have spent way too long testing setups that achieve 100% dodge. I cannot stress enough that 98% or 99% dodge just is not good enough, if you want to survive wormholes you need at least 100%. Of course you can instead just have no dodge and play perfectly, but that's not going to happen. You can make a build on local and set your wormhole to 800 then clear it by maxing dps, but you will (probably) never actually reach wormhole 800 on season without maxing dodge, because dying decrements your wormhole level.

//EDIT: As of today's patch, dying no longer decrements WH level.

Setup Tiers

Because I'd rather just write one guide for marksman instead of 4 I'm going to try and divide the setups into 4 tiers, ascending in accordance to how expensive they are. There's not really a pretty way to present that information so this guide might end up being pretty long and ugly. Akke forgive me :(

  1. Any% Marksman set without Nut runes - Is cheap, does not cap dodge, ideal for farming mos'arathim desert, won't get far in wormholes
  2. 99% Marksman set with Nut runes - Caps dodge, will comfortably hit wormhole 150 and beyond (https://youtu.be/CYlIUXXbyTo)
  3. Potency runeword bow - Caps dodge, breaks immune, approx wormhole 300+ (https://youtu.be/LggzGkOAZNM)
  4. Shadowfury + Force - Endgame setup, should hit wh 450+ (https://youtu.be/LPz8NXj_9pw?t=1157) Please note for any changes in the gear choices between the written and video guides, the written guide should be followed over the video guide. In the shadowfury setup I also incorrectly stated that force can't fit into the build without 115% quality on gear so ignore that and refer to the written for that setup.

Tier 1: Any% Marksman Set

Realistically if you are just zone farming you can sub most of this out for cheaper options, you don't need much damage. Marksman set bonus makes attacks homing which makes this build pretty chill. There's a relic that gives homing shots as well but the set gives good damage for farming and is usually cheap cause people think it's trash, so imo just go for the set and don't rely on relics.

  • Rift Warrior's Skull Amulet / High Demon's Necklace will also be fine
  • Lightforge Helm / Demon Warlord's or Judge Jury & Executioner also solid options
  • Marksman's Hunting Bow
  • Marksman's Hunting Shroud
  • Dragonsteel Ring - Gives flight, MS and AS, awesome ring
  • Commander's Sash / Warrior Belt also good
  • Empty Bottle of Vodka potion / Maggot Eye
  • Marksman's Hunting Gloves
  • Assassin's Boots / Hermes Boots also good for this purpose
  • Marksman's Quiver

Runes don't really matter I'd just put Dau runes in there for attack speed cause they're cheap. Really the only essential items for this tier is the marksman's set and you should be able to farm pretty efficiently with any of the other choices provided.

Tier 2: 99% Marksman Set Max Dodge

This setup requires almost 99% quality on all gear and is pretty much optimized though there is a ring swap you can make to get more dodge if required. Really fun and simple build that will get you surprisingly far in wormholes, easily capable of tripling the current rank 1 MM's wormhole level (56 at time of writing) in a day. With a bit of luck you can see success in wormholes even without completely maxing dodge, as the range increase from homing shots makes this the safest non-100% dodge option if you play cautious.

  • Rift Warrior's Skull
  • Demon Warlord's Helm
  • Marksman's Hunting Bow (Gunshot ability)
  • Marksman's Hunting Shroud
  • Dragonsteel Ring - This can be swapped for Molten Ring if you can't cap dodge otherwise
  • Commander's Sash
  • Empty Bottle of Vodka
  • Marksman's Hunting Gloves
  • Assassin's Boots
  • Marksman's Quiver

With Nut runes in every socket (total of 35) you will hit 101% dodge which leaves you with 4 dodge stacks.

Tier 3: Potency Runeword Bow

This setup is excellent due to the armour break proc on Potency. Armour break strips away the immunity to physical damage that a lot of monsters have in higher wormholes, which quickly becomes the bottleneck to progress. It also substantially increases dps against bosses.

  • Rift Warrior's Skull
  • Judge, Jury & Executioner
  • Potency Runeword Bow (Gunshot ability / Piercing also good)
  • Dark Shroud
  • Dragonsteel Ring
  • Commander's Sash
  • Empty Bottle of Vodka
  • Marksman's Hunting Gloves
  • Assassin's Boots
  • Marksman's Quiver

Again, all Nut everything. 102% dodge - 4 dodge stacks.

Potential swap here is using Molten Ring and Lightforge instead of Dragonsteel Ring and Judge Judy but I highly value the flight on Dragonsteel and wouldn't trade it for such a marginal improvement (if it even is an improvement).

Tier 4: Shadowfury + Force - The God Tier

This is the setup for when you really just want to be rank 1 marksman in season 9. Swapping Potency for Shadowfury, we get armour break from the Force runeword chest piece. Due to Shadowfury's insane damage, speed and innate piercing ability, this build just rips through wormholes behind the comfort of 4 dodge stacks, no relics required. 350-400m dummy DPS.

  • Satan's Precious
  • Demon Warlord's Helm
  • Shadowfury (Gunshot ability)
  • Force Runeword Chest
  • Dragonsteel Ring / Molten Ring
  • Commander's Sash
  • Empty Bottle of Vodka
  • Assassin's Mitts / Marksman's Hunting Gloves / Breach Gauntlets
  • Assassin's Boots
  • Marksman's Quiver

All nut everything.

The pieces you're going to use here depend on quality. If you have 115% the setup is Dragonsteel Ring + Assassin's Mitts or Molten Ring + Breach Gauntlets. The difference here will be pretty small so I would go for the Dragonsteel Ring + Assassin's Mitts to keep flight. If you have 99% the setup is Molten Ring and Marksman's Gloves, barely scraping it to 100% dodge with 3 dodge stacks. If you just don't care about breaking the immunities on monsters then you can run Dark Shroud instead of Force and do whatever (Lightforge Helm, Breach Gauntlets) cause DS gives so much dodge, but the armour break from Force is such a massive increase to effective dps I would stick to the setup provided.

Hero Levels and Minion

Crit Damage > All Elements > Strength, probably. None of these options will end up making a meaningful impact to your gameplay or progress, you might decide you want more ruby drops or something. That's just you cooking.

Minion can run a Potency bow to increase proc speed on bosses but I wouldn't really worry about it. It's probably not worth the time it takes to resurrect him. If you are farming worldzones you can put a Windstride on him for the movespeed buff. Again, not a very high priority.

Conclusion

I'm pretty sure that Marksman has been heavily undervalued in season 9. I had a lot of fun testing all these builds out and I was surprised at how the class was both safe and fast in reasonably high wormholes. Marksman set is super chill for grinding 3-3 as well. I think that MM's placing in the current tier list is due to lack of testing, not the class's lack of power. As of writing, rank 1 Marksman is at wormhole 56, which can be far surpassed even just using the set build.

Again, apologies for the wall of text guide but given there are 4 distinct gearsets you can use, I decided to do it this way instead of making 4 separate marksman guides lol.
